BBC The Responder fans thrilled as hit show set to return for season 2

Fans of The Responder are thrilled after the BBC programme was renewed for a second season.

The first series of the Liverpool-set thriller arrived on our screens to widespread critical acclaim earlier this year. The show was written by former Merseyside Police officer Tony Schumacher and was inspired by his experiences working for the force.

The Responder stars Martin Freeman as Chris Carson, a morally compromised urgent response officer tackling a series of night shifts on the beat in Liverpool. The last episode of the series ended as Chris and his partner, Rachel Hargreaves, drove away in the police car to take on another gruelling shift.

The open-ended finale left viewers hopeful there would be another series of the programme - and BBC bosses have now confirmed the exciting news. The broadcaster's chief content officer, Charlotte Moore announced The Responder will return for season two in an interview in this week's edition of Radio Times magazine.

Martin Freeman will return in the lead role and the scripts will once again be written by Tony Schumacher. Viewers of the show on Twitter were thrilled at the news.

Roy said: "Brilliant news #TheResponder by far and away the best TV of year so far"

Hayla added: "It is exactly what I needed!"

Misha posted: "Yes!!! Can’t wait!"

John tweeted : "Congratulations Mr Schumacher well deserved"
