BBC The One Show's Alex Jones 'didn't realise she was pregnant' with baby she and husband later lost

Exploring fertility and IVF in her new documentary Alex Jones: Making Babies Welsh TV presenter Alex Jones opened up about her own miscarriage while speaking to morning TV host Lorraine Kelly. Ammanford-born Alex appeared on the ITV morning show and spoke openly about her own pregnancy journey.

Ahead of the debut episode of Making Babies tonight, January 5, Alex spoke about the difficulties she faced while trying for a second baby after the birth of her first child Teddy. She said, of her and husband Charlie Thomson's pregnancy journey: "We didn't have a straightforward time, between the two boys, we had a loss then and quite late on and then it resulted in some complications. I didn't go down the IVF route, we thought we might have to but we didn't in the end."

The pair are now parents to three children Kit, Teddy and Annie.

Alex also spoke about the "inherent need" to have a baby, she said: "Once you've decided you want a baby, that need, that inherent need to have the baby, it overtakes everything". Previously Alex revealed she was back on TV an hour after doctors told her she'd had a miscarriage.

Speaking to the Telegraph previously, Alex said: "We actually got pregnant in October 2017, when Teddy was 10 months, and we lost that baby. I didn’t realise for a long time because I had been breastfeeding and your periods don’t come back straight away." Alex explained: "We learnt the baby didn’t have a heartbeat. I was around 14 weeks, which is a decent amount of time. The baby had stopped developing at about nine weeks. That was really hard. It hit us like a ton of bricks."

Although her bosses said that Alex did not need to return to work she was back on TV within an hour of finding out that she had a miscarriage. She said: "I said, 'What else am I going to do?' It’s a horrible feeling because it is so empty. There’s nothing to say. It’s done."

Alex's documentary, Alex Jones: Making Babies, will air on W Channel on Thursday, December 5 at 8pm. You can catch up with her full interview with Lorraine on ITVx now.
