BBC The Apprentice: Girls turn on boys in tense boardroom showdown

They say men and women can't be friends, but on The Apprentice it's looking increasingly likely that they can't work together either.

This week's episode of The Apprentice begins with a shock for everyone as candidate Shama stood up in front of her colleagues, and Lord Sugar, to announce her intention to leave the process for health reasons.

The candidates reported to London's Mercato Metropolitano after an early morning telephone summons (4am, ouch).

"I'd like like to say something," said Shama with everyone assembled. "I suffer from a condition called rheumatoid arthritis."

She continued: "Due to this process being so physically demanding, and despite the efforts the whole team has made, I've had to make the difficult derision to leave the process."

Her colleagues looked shocked as Lord Sugar said: "I'm really sad to hear that and I wish you and your family all the best for the future."

It was a sad start but it didn't dampen spirits (pun totally intended, sorry) as the teams were tasked with branding and producing a new non-alcoholic drink.

And it was all change this week as the teams, formerly split into girls versus boys, had a little shake up of personnel with two boys sent to the girl's team and vice versa.

Teams names were chosen and product decisions were made in the usual haphazard but blindly assertive way.

Led by Nick, Team Diverse chose to create a non-alcoholic vodka, lime and soda drink which they called "Vodify".

And Team Infinity chose a craft beer which they named: "Crafted and Spiced".

Nick nominated himself to star in Team Diverse's App which was designed to show the user how they'd look if if they drink alcohol (complete with bruises, spots and even a dab of vomit) versus how one looks if the non-alcoholic lifestyle is chosen (fresh-faced and Insta-fabulous, naturally.)

The pitches were suitably cringe-making.

To be honest, by this point we were cringing so much we'd gone behind the sofa, but we heard Nick suggest that Team Diverse walk on to the stage sort of doing a little dance-bop. "A bit like Teresa May," to which his female team mates roared with laughter.

Despite both producing revolting drinks that literally no one liked, it was Team Infinity in the firing line and the usual arguments over accountability ensued with the male teammates being blamed as the problem.

"Akshay did zero percent," said Sophie. "You hardly spoke."

And Navid was also accused of not contributing.

Stephanie said: "It was more just me and Sophie, and Navid was helping just with the syringes. We would have come up with the same product if he was there or not."

Akshay fought back though: "How many sales did you do Sophie? Your team made less than 100 sales."

"We wouldn't have had a product to sell if it was left to you", Sophie snapped back.

Oh well, another candidate bites the dust, which was probably tastier than the drinks they made to be fair.

The Apprentice continues next Thursday at 9pm on BBC One.
