The BBC has released a new teaser for its upcoming series of Waterloo Road, revealing when fans will be able to catch the new look school drama.
The broadcaster confirmed back in September last year that it would be bringing back the much-loved series, which ran for 200 episodes over nine years from 2006. Fans were hopeful that the show would return before 2022 is out after returning star Katie Griffiths, who plays Chlo Grainger, shared reunion snaps on her Instagram in January this year, writing in the caption: "Coming to @bbciplayer later this year."
However, it seems fans have slightly longer to wait than anticipated after the BBC released a brief teaser for the new series on Instagram on Saturday night. A video showing a blurry school scene with the highly-recognisable Waterloo Road theme tune playing over it showed a new look logo for the series in orange. Underneath, it said: "Coming early 2023 to BBC One and BBC iPlayer".
The teaser has sent fans into a frenzy as they rushed to the comments to express their excitement. "AHHH THE MUSIC BRINGS BACK SO MANY MEMORIES," gushed laura.olivia27. Another user, warp10_, said: "I literally cannot wait!!! Waterloo Road forever!"
Others were disappointed to hear that they had several months to wait before the new series would be released. "i thought it was coming later this year? either way i haven’t shut up about this - can’t wait," _racheljayx said, while waterlooroad_4ever asked: "What happened to late 2022?"
But fans are now eagerly waiting for the day the series finally returns. ucrafti said: "I’m watching them all now ready for next year," while izzyevangelinemain commented: "I can’t wait!!! Been counting down!!!!"
It comes as former Coronation Street star Kym Marsh, who plays a dinner lady in the new series, was seen practising her moves for Strictly Come Dancing on the Waterloo Road set. The soap star paid a visit to see her co-stars with dance partner Graziano Di Prima as they filmed for the new series in Manchester.
The couple even treated the crowd to a rendition of the Samba that they had been rehearsing for this week's show. The smooth moves, put to Volaire by Gypsy Kings, scored them a total of 32 points from the judges on Saturday night.
Kym, 46, admitted that she had been struggling to juggle rehearsals with her work schedule after reaching the fourth week of the series. Despite finding it "nerve-wracking" practising in front of her colleagues on the Waterloo Road set, she was thrilled to get the support of her co-stars.
The former popstar joins a number of new and old faces as Waterloo Road returns to the BBC. Emmerdale's Adam Thomas will be reprising his role from the original run as Donte Charles, while Angela Griffin is set to return as Kim Campbell, who will be the school's headteacher this time around.
Kym is not the only Corrie star to join the cast. Sonia Ibrahim and Rachel Leskovac will play Jamilah Omar, the school's social worker and Coral Walker, the head of English, while Ryan Clayton, who played evil Josh Tucker in the ITV soap, will join as a mysterious new character called Mike.
