BBC Strictly viewers sob at 'beautiful' opening dance in tribute to the Queen

The opening dance number on Strictly Come Dancing on Sunday, November 13 was a moving Remembrance Day tribute to the late Queen Elizabeth II and fans at home were in tears as they praised the emotional number.

Strictly's professional dancers waltzed around the dancefloor in red dresses and formal tails to Thaxted, taken from the central section of Jupiter, a movement from Gustav Holst’s orchestral suite The Planets, or more commonly recognised as the tune to World in Union or the hymn, I Vow to Thee My Country.

The results show followed the last live episode before the action moves up to Blackpool for the first time since 2019. Saturday saw the nine remaining couples battle for a place in next week’s Blackpool special, which will see the BBC One show return to the prestigious Tower Ballroom since 2019 due to the pandemic.

Viewers were moved by the opening segment and quickly expressed their feelings about it. One watcher wrote: "‘I Vow To Thee’ on #strictly has just finished me off completely." Another said: "Oh gal Strictly’s got me sobbing already." And a third wrote: "And sobbing. Thank you Lilibet."

"What a beautiful remembrance tribute to the armed forces and Queen Elizabeth II," said another.

The lovely performance ended with a picture of the late Queen as a young woman dressed in her uniform as she reached the level of honorary junior commander, the equivalent of an army captain, after completing five months of training.

The results show also saw the dance-off cancelled. It should have featured Tony Adams and Tyler West but Tony was forced to quit due to injury. Read more about that here.
