BBC Strictly host Claudia Winkleman makes sly dig at the government as viewers distracted by her outfit

The disarray on Downing Street crossed over to the dancefloor during Saturday night's Strictly Come Dancing. Host Claudia Winkleman couldn't resist making a reference to the chaos after a week that saw Liz Truss resign as Prime Minister, outlasted by a lettuce, after just 44 days in power.

The presenter made a cheeky dig at her departure, with Rishi Sunak and Penny Mordaunt in the running to replace her and her predecessor Boris Johnson tipped to be on the cusp of making a comeback, as celebrities and their pro partners danced to iconic BBC theme tunes in celebration of the broadcaster’s 100th anniversary. Routines included the theme music to Casualty, Doctor Who, EastEnders and The Apprentice.

As wildlife presenter and cameraman Hamza Yassin prepared to take his turn on the dancefloor for the quickstep with Jowita Przystał to On Top Of The World by Imagine Dragons, the theme to BBC Nature Programming, Claudia made a quip to camera. "Still to come, Hamza takes on a tricky ballroom dance," she began.

"And if he’s any good at leading, I'll be frank, the country might have a job for him," Claudia said straight-faced. The star then flashed a mischievous grin at her joke and the camera cut to co-star Tess Daly smiling with amusement.

Fans watching at home loved the dig on the BBC dance contest after a tense time at number 10. @SarcasticGrad tweeted: "Loving Claudia’s dig at the Government." And @LevParikian noted: "Bit of politics there from Claudia."

Claudia also had fans talking with her striking outfit of a crisp white suit and black shirt. The look reminded them of John Travolta in character as the snake-hipped disco king Tony Manero in the 1977 film Saturday Night Fever.
