BBC Sherwood: Where is new crime drama filmed?

New BBC drama Sherwood is based on the true events of two murders that shocked Nottinghamshire in 2004. In the drama news of the crime threatens to unearth secrets from the past and shatter an already fractured community.

Featuring an impressive cast, including David Morrissey and Joanne Froggatt the drama will begin on BBC One on Monday, June, 13. The drama is set in Nottinghamshire and is based on a true story about events that happened in the hometown of James Graham, the Creator and Executive Producer of Sherwood.

The show is not a literal adaptation and the characters are fictional but the drama has been inspired by real events in the community. Sherwood was filmed in various locations around Nottinghamshire.

These locations include the village of Annesley, where the real-life murders took place in 2004, Newstead Abbey, and Newstead station. Filming for the show began in summer 2021 and finished in October 2021.

Filming crews were also spotted filming the series in Bolton, near the Pigeon Tower in Rivington. Cast members were spotted in Blackpool with David Morrissey seen at Preece Hall in Weeton. It is also believed a protest scene was shot in Blackpool.

James spoke about what it was like to represent his community, he said: "Coming from this community, places like this rarely get screen time. I don't think there's ever been a drama set in the part of the world in which I grew up. So to be able to put those voices and those people, and their sense of humour and wit, and that experience, and the conditions that underpin that community on screen, is a huge privilege."

David Morrissey, who plays Detective Chief Superintendent Ian St Clair, also spoke about filming in a Working Men's Club. He said: "One of the great locations, one of the central locations, is the club. It's the Working Men's Club, and lots of action happens there, lots of community events."

Sherwood will begin on BBC One on Monday, June, 13, at 9pm.
