BBC Sherwood Nottinghamshire accents have the 'nation divided'

New BBC One drama, Sherwood, has already ruffled a few feathers among football fans since airing last night, Monday, June 13, and now some Notts folks have questioned the accents in the show.

Written by Nottinghamshire's own James Graham, the six-part series has been inspired by events surrounding two Nottinghamshire murders which happened back in 2004.

The BBC has used the local area for filming some the scenes - locations such as the village of Annesley, at Newstead Abbey and also at Newstead station, for instance.

While the show also stars a Nottinghamshire actor - Philip Jackson who plays Mickey Sparrow was born in Retford Nottinghamshire - viewers are not convinced that some of the other accents are true.

Writer James Graham has already explained and apologised for the reference to 'Notts Forest' rather than Nottingham Forest in the show. When it comes to accents though he appears to have been silent so far.

Of course, not everyone was upset by the accents. As one Twitter user pointed out. Captioning the Tweet "A nation divided #Sherwood" the social media user highlighted two separate tweets in the same timeline. One comment read: "Still waiting for a convincing Nottingham accent", alongside another reading "Crickey their accents are spot on".

Some viewers recommended looking by the accents though. They began: "Everyone fixating on the accents and not the storyline which is extremely powerful.".

The second episode will air tonight, Tuesday, June 14, 9.00pm. You can catch up on BBC iPlayer.
