BBC's Watchdog solves couple's TUI flight drama after typo put honeymoon in jeopardy

A couple's honeymoon plans have been saved after BBC Watchdog persuaded TUI to amend a problem on their flight tickets. Stephanie and Robbie contacted the consumer rights programme – which now airs as part of The One Show – when their attempts to correct a typo allegedly went unanswered by the tour group.

Reporter Nikki Fox explained that the couple are due to get married next Saturday and enjoy their honeymoon in the Maldives. But Stephanie accidentally put her married surname on her flight booking instead of her maiden name, which is on her passport.

Unable to obtain a new passport in time, the couple were facing the prospect of being turned away at the airport. Fox claimed they had found "no luck" when asking TUI for a correction.

She said that Stephanie and Robbie contacted Watchdog on Tuesday to ask for help. When the BBC approached the tour group, it was able to fix the typo and save the couple's honeymoon plans within 24 hours.

The story was aired as part of a Watchdog feature on travel, which also touched on the recent chaos at major airports across the UK. EasyJet, TUI and Wizz Air are among the airlines that have cancelled flights this week due to staff shortages.

Commenting on how some families' holidays have been axed at the last minute, presenter Alex Jones said: "It's really unfair. Families sitting on planes. I mean, how do you explain to children that you're suddenly not going on holiday?"

Fox advised people who are looking to book future flights to try smaller airports where there have been fewer reported issues and airlines with good flight records. She added: "It does pay right now to do some research".

Other guests on The One Show on Wednesday included comedian Katherine Ryan and former vicar Reverend Richard Coles.

The One Show airs weekdays at 7pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
