Australian drama series, The Newsreader, has finally aired its first episode in the UK. The six-episode series, which was broadcast to Aussie viewers in 2021, premiered its first episode on Sunday, July 25 on BBC Two. Read here to find out what else is on this week.
Created by Michael Lucas and Joanna Werner and directed by Emma Freeman, The Newsreader was filmed in Melbourne. The series was filmed during the pandemic and followed the Australian Covid-19 restrictions.

Who is in the cast of The Newsreader?
Anna Torv
Australian actress, Anna Torv, leads the cast of The Newsreader as Helen Norville - the titular newsreader. Anna is perhaps best known for her role in Netflix's Mindhunter. Describing her character, Anna told TV Insider: "She’s top of the food chain, as far as wanting to be on the desk."
Anna has also made appearances in The Pacific, Deadline Gallipoli and will appear in the television adaptation of The Last of Us next year.
Sam Reid
The other main star of The Newsreader is Sam Reid, who plays junior reporter Dale Jennings. The Newsreader follows Helen and Dale's personal relationship as well as the public pressures of reporting some of the most iconic news stories of 1986.
Sam has previously appeared in The Riot Club, Prime Suspect 1973 and Waiting for the Barbarians.
Robert Taylor
Robert Taylor plays Geoff Walters in The Newsreader. Geoff is a newsreader veteran in the series and has a lot more experience compared to the likes of Helen and Dale.
Robert's other roles include Agent Jones in The Matrix, Dr Heller in The Meg and Captain of the Boat in Kong: Skull Island opposite Tom Hiddleston and Brie Larson.
What is The Newsreader all about?
The Newsreader follows glamorous, talented, and overlooked (in the-then chauvinistic world of TV news) newsreader Helen Norville (Anna Torv) and junior reporter Dale Jennings (Sam Reid) and their personal relationship as well as the public pressures of reporting some of the most iconic news stories of 1986.
The series debuted on Australian television in 2021 and was soon commissioned for a second series, which is yet to air.
How can you watch The Newsreader?
The Newsreader continues on BBC Two on Sunday, July 31 at 9pm, with each episode then released consecutively for a further four weeks.
