BBC's Platinum Party at the Palace under fire as fans slam Rod Stewart performance

Platinum Party at the Palace viewers were confused by Rod Stewart's performance.

The 77-year-old was part of the line-up on tonight's BBC broadcast. The event also featured performances from acts such as Craig David and Sam Ryder as the nation paid tribute to Queen Elizabeth II as she celebrates 70 years on the throne.

The rock star performed a medley of his hits at the event Buckingham Palace. Rod thrilled the audience as he finished his performance with a rendition of Sweet Caroline.

The watching royals were seen enjoying the routine as Prince George sung along to the Neil Diamond classic. However, viewers following the show on Twitter were confused why Rod performed a cover when he has such a strong back catalogue of his own songs.

Savage said: "So….all of Rod Stewarts back catalogue and he (or someone quite high up) chooses #SweetCaroline #PlatinumPartyatthePalace"

Jupiter commented: "Rod Stewart 50 years of hits and he is forced to sing sweet Caroline"

Phillip posted: "If they wanted #SweetCaroline, why did they ask #RodStewart and not invite #NeilDiamond?"

Susannah said: "Poor Rod. I know Sweet Caroline was to get the crowd going, but he’s got a better back catalogue. Why did he have to sing someone else’s song - a B lister should have done that"
