BBC's Lucy Owen thanks fans for 'lovely messages' following life changing surgery

Lucy Owen has thanked fans after undergoing emergency surgery.

The BBC newsreader took to social media on Friday to confirm that a procedure to save her eyesight has been successful. However, she still has months of recover ahead - and won't be able to see in this time.

As well as sporting an eyepatch for the foreseeable future, she has also been put on bed rest and must lie on her side for a week. Taking to Twitter to share her difficult experience, Owen also expressed thanked fans for support after previously expressing gratitude to health officials for spotting and treating the potentially life threatening issue.

As reported by the Mirror, the 52 year-old tweeted: "Thanks so much for your lovely messages, so kind of you. Having to lie on my side for a week and won’t get my vision back for a few months - tricky for autocue!

"But look what I had from my wonderful Wales Today colleagues. So lucky work with such gorgeous people." At the weekend she revealed how she could have lost her sight had it not been for a routine visit to the opticians.

The presenter is now wearing an eye patch and on bed rest after the life-changing procedure. Had it not been spotted during an eye check-up, Lucy could have been left permanently blind in her right eye.

She spoke about having corrective surgery and the fears that came with no having it done. "Again I need to say a huge thank you to the NHS," the news anchor wrote.

"Going home after Mr Williams and the amazing team @CV_UHB ( Cardiff and Vale University Health Board) stopped me losing sight in my eye with surgery for a detached retina.

"Very grateful to my optician who spotted it and rushed my in. Diolch all. Keep an eye on yours too."
