BBC's Huw Edwards wears black tie to host news after The Queen health update

Huw Edwards wore a black tie to host the BBC News on Thursday afternoon, after the channel made major changes to its schedule in response to the news that The Queen was under medical supervision.

Shortly after 12.30pm a statement came in from Buckingham Palace which read: "Following further evaluation this morning, The Queen’s doctors are concerned for Her Majesty’s health and have recommended she remain under medical supervision.

"The Queen remains comfortable and at Balmoral."

In the minutes that followed it was then confirmed that The Queen's son, Prince Charles had gone to be with her at Balmoral, with Prince William and wife Kate Middleton also en route.

Channel bosses reacted swiftly to the statement by interrupting an episode of Bargain Hunt to cut to a live BBC News broadcast as updates came in about more of The Queen's family, like Princess Anne, Prince Andrew and the Duke of Sussex headed to Balmoral.

Long-serving presenter Huw took the reins shortly before 1.30pm and viewers immediately noticed the colour of his tie, with him wearing a black one as royal correspondent Nicholas Witchell told him the news was "greatly concerning." Picking up on the tie and Huw being on way earlier than usual, someone tweeted: "Huw Edwards normally presents the 10pm news bulletins. He came on air wearing a black tie."

A second posted: "Huw Edwards has got his black tie on and barriers are going up at Balmoral. BBC has suspended standard programmes until 6pm," with a third tweeting: "Huw Edwards already wearing black tie ready for any announcement."
