BBC's Great Expectations: Viewers question why another remake is made as show receives lukewarm reception

It has been just 12 years since the BBC last aired a new adaptation of Great Expectations with a new series starting on BBC One on Sunday, March 26. Now viewers are questioning why the BBC has made another version so soon as the new series is criticised by viewers.

Great Expectations follows the story of the classic Charles Dickens novel under the same title. The new series has a dark twist to the traditional tale and is directed by Steven Knight, the creator of Peaky Blinders.

However, not all viewers are impressed with the new series and took to Twitter to air their thoughts. One said: "Not a great start so far. This is less an adaptation than a confection! Why does the BBC think it has the creative ability to improve Dickens? It really hasn’t! Rant over. #GreatExpectations".

Another added: "New #GreatExpectations isn’t terribly good…" and one said: "That’s it. The dialogue is awful. I’m off. #GreatExpectations". A fourth said: "#GreatExpectations more like low expectations" and one viewer lamented: "Watching #GreatExpectations So far not a single word of Dickens except for the characters’ names. Sigh."

The new drama features an impressive cast featuring Olivia Coleman, Shalom Brune-Franklin and Trystan Gravelle. There will be six one-hour long episodes in the series, with the second instalment airing on Sunday, April 2 at 9pm on BBC One.

Great Expectations is the coming-of-age story of Pip, an orphan who yearns for a greater lot in life until a twist of fate and the evil machinations of the mysterious and eccentric Miss Havisham show him a dark world of possibilities. Under the great expectations placed upon him, Pip will have to work out the true cost of this new world and whether it will truly make him the man he wishes to be.
