BBC's Gary Lineker caught up in awkward blunder after England beat Wales

BBC sports pundit Gary Lineker inadvertently said England's World Cup Round of 16 clash against Senegal would be airing on the incorrect channel.

Phil Foden achieved his first World Cup goal against Wales last night as Marcus Rashford put two away himself, handing the England team a 3 - 0 win. The match was broadcast on the BBC as was the previous 6 -2 victory for England over Iran.

That being said, it will be ITV airing the Three Lions playing Senegal on Sunday evening. Speaking after the full-time whistle, regular pundit Gary Lineker began to run through his typical advertising for the BBC before having to stop himself mid-sentence.

He said: "7 o'clock live on… well… ITV… oh well." It was a slightly awkward moment that drew some restrained laughter from Lineker's punditry panel consisting of Alan Shearer, Ashley Williams, Ian Rush and Rio Ferdinand.

Indeed, not only do ITV have the rights to show England's clash against Senegal but they will also have the option to broadcast the quarter-final clash for the Three Lions, should they progress past Aliou Cisse's side in Sunday's encounter, Mirror reported.

It has already been highlighted how England have sharply contrasting fortunes when shown on BBC and ITV. England have played 31 matches in the World Cup from the 1998 version onwards, including the opening three games of Euro 2022, of which 16 have been broadcast on the BBC and 15 on ITV. The Three Lions have had quite different fortunes depending on which channel they are on.

England have won 12 of their matches shown on BBC – a win rate of 75 per cent, including the victories over Iran and Wales in this tournament – while they have managed to win just two of the 15 matches shown on ITV – including the goalles draw against the United States – a win rate of just 13 per cent.
