BBC's 'brilliant' Belfast drama Blue Lights hailed as best TV in years

New BBC crime drama Blue Lights, which explores the challenges faced by police in Belfast, has been hailed as the 'best TV in years' by delighted viewers. The six episode series follows the journeys of three rookie officers during their probabion period with the Police Service of Northern Ireland.

The show was created and written by Northern Ireland pair Declan Lawn and Adam Patterson who wrote the 2020 drama based on The Salisbury Poisonings. The duo previously said: “Every writer wants to explore their own place, and their own society as authentically and as honestly as they can. We feel enormously grateful to BBC drama for letting us do that with Blue Lights. And to do it with a cast boasting so much new and established talent makes it even more exciting.”

And after it aired for the first time earlier this week, viewers took to social media afterwards to heap praise on every aspect of the programme, with some comparing it to the Beeb's previous hugely successful cop productions Line Of Duty and Happy Valley.

One Twitter user wrote: "#BlueLights what a show @BBCOneNI @BBCOne I already need to know when is season 2?! Best thing I’ve watched in years. Excellent."

Another commented: "Wow, got to say I was totally blown away with how powerful the new @BBC drama Blue Lights was. It's an edge-of-the-seat, gritty depiction of policing in Belfast, NI. I highly recommend it for its writing, acting and bravery. #BlueLights."

A third added: "So we have mourned #lineofduty we are still mourning #happyvalley and then you give us #BlueLights Absolutely bravo @bbc It was brilliant, more please.

A fourth said: "Very impressed with #BlueLights, the new PSNI drama on the beeb. Strong cast and a decent storyline."

A fifth declared: "To everyone involved in the making of #BlueLights, take a bow. Absolutely brilliant."

And another thrilled viewer offered: "Watched episode 1, #BlueLights lost the day to the whole series! Thank you for giving us hope post Happy Valley & Line of Duty! Fantastic characters, really cared about them, thrilling TV of horrifying daily lives. Anything that grabs me & even makes me cry…wow!"

The whole series is available to watch on BBC iPlayer now.
