BBC's Big Night of Musicals: All the productions featured on the show coming to Bristol this year

Musical fans and theatre lovers would no doubt have been tuned in and watching BBC's Big Night of Musicals last night.

If you missed it, fear not as it is available to watch again now on BBC iPlayer or, if you're in need of a visit to the theatre or you desperately miss a night out singing along to your favourite musical numbers, then why not check out some of the things coming to the Bristol Hippodrome this year?

Last night's lineup consisted of some 17 performances from some of the best musicals on stage right now - and six of them are coming to Bristol in 2022!

Dreamgirls was also on the show but that production has been and gone, running in Bristol from January 6 to January 22. So too has Disney's Beauty and the Beast which closed here in Bristol on Saturday, September 18, 2021.

Some of the shows not featured in last night's BBC programme, but which are also venturing to the city's Hippodrome later this year (and so we've called them our honourable mentions) include Anything Goes, We Will Rock You, Singin' in the Rain, Mamma Mia!, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Sister Act.

Disney's The Lion King

Dates: Thursday, February 17 - Saturday, March 19, 2022

Waitress

Dates: Tuesday, February 8 - Saturday, February 12, 2022

Synopsis and cast: Chelsea Halfpenny (Emmerdale, 9 to 5 the Musical) stars in the hit musical comedy Waitress as Jenna, with Sandra Marvin (Witress, Emmerdale, Hairspray) playing Becky, Evelyn Hoskins (Waitress, Spring Awakening) as Dawn and Matt Willis (Busted, A Christmas Carol, Wicked) as Dr Pomatter.

"Meet Jenna, a waitress and expert pie-maker who dreams of some happiness in her life. When a hot new doctor arrives in town, life gets complicated.

"With the support of her workmates Becky and Dawn, Jenna overcomes the challenges she faces and finds that laughter, love and friendship can provide the perfect recipe for happiness."

Les Miserables

The stage production of Les Misérables (Helen Maybanks)

Synopsis: "Set against the backdrop of 19th-century France, Les Misérables tells an enthralling story of broken dreams and unrequited love, passion, sacrifice and redemption – a timeless testament to the survival of the human spirit."

Chicago

Dates: Monday, April 25 - Saturday, April 30, 2022

Synopsis and cast: Chicago is back in Bristol for one week only and stars one of the world's greatest classical singers, Russell Watson, as Billy Flynn, Coronation Street's Faye Brookes (Grease, Legally Blonde) as Roxie Hart, Three Degrees legend Sheila Ferguson (Thoroughly Modern Millie, Soul Train, Oh! What A Night) as Matron 'Mama' Morton and West End star Djalenga Scott (Annie, Chicago, West Side Story) as Velma Kelly.

"Murder, greed, corruption, exploitation, adultery and treachery…all those things we hold near and dear to our hearts” So begins the international multi-award-winning musical, Chicago."

School of Rock

Dates: Tuesday, May 10 - Saturday, May 14, 2022

Synopsis: "Get ready to stick it to the man Bristol, because Andrew Lloyd Webber’s West End and Broadway hit musical School of Rock is coming to rock out at the Hippodrome!

"School of Rock is the global hit musical based on the iconic movie starring Jack Black. Wannabe rock star Dewey Finn is cast out by his dive‐bar bandmates and finds himself in desperate need of cash.

"Posing as a substitute music teacher at an elite prep school, he exposes his students to the rock gods he idolises, transforming them into a mind‐blowing rock band. While teaching these pint‐sized prodigies what it means to truly rock out, Dewey falls for the school’s beautiful, but uptight headmistress, Miss Mullins, helping her rediscover the wild child within. Bat Out of Hell
