Lauren Laverne has revealed an unfortunate coincidence during her first stint as Pointless co-host. The radio DJ and TV presenter made her debut on the popular daytime game show on Thursday (October 20) alongside host Alexander Armstrong.
Viewers of the BBC One show have seen various famous faces step up to the role left vacant by Richard Osmon. Back in April, the TV presenter, producer and novelist announced that he was leaving his co-presenter role on Pointless to focus on his Thursday Murder Club book series and other projects.
Coronation Street star Sally Lindsay was the first to step in to to the role, held by Richard since it made its debut in 2009, as part of an all-star line-up of guest presenters which has since included Stephen Mangan and now Lauren.
But as she got stuck into her first show, there was a slightly awkward moment when the show’s contestants were asked about the tenure of UK prime ministers which came hours after PM Liz Truss announced her resignation after just 44 days in the job after taking over from Boris Johnson.
On the show, contestants were asked for answers relating to “British prime ministers who served for two years or longer”, which wouldn't have including Liz Truss as an answer even if it was live and not pre-recorded.
Following the latest political fallout, Lauren felt the need to flag what Pointless fans would see on her first show. She wrote on Twitter: "My first category on #Pointless: British PMs and how long they lasted." She added: "Just to flag, we pre-recorded the programme."
But viewers saw the funny side. @ShannenJJohnson tweeted: "Perfectly timed prime minister category on #Pointless - British prime ministers who lasted more than two years (of course I got two pointless answers cos PMs is my special subject)." @dicoupey posted: "@XanderArmstrong Bravo #Pointless, Bravo! Just home from pick up - Question : Name a Prime Minister that has held the post for 2 yrs or more ? ( Up to and including March 2022) - How very apt for today...... @laurenlaverne was in the chair this episode."
@Gmackematix wrote: "The writer of that question couldn't have imagined a prime minister would have come and gone between filming and broadcasting. Incredible! #Pointless." @TRAXXAS58 laughed: "Pointless on BBC having a question of 'British Prime Ministers who served for 2 years or longer' on the day Liz Truss resigned as Prime Minister after 45 days is an absolute violation." @clopidogally added: "The BBC throwing shade with this episode of Pointless. The first round is Prime Minister's who lasted longer than 2 years."
