BBC One Sherwood: Fans not happy at 'Notts Forest' reference in drama

Nottingham Forest fans all had the same criticism when their team was mentioned on the first episode of BBC One's Sherwood. The drama aired for the first time on Monday, June 13 at 9pm, inspired by two Nottinghamshire murders back in 2004.

The show, which is written by Nottinghamshire's own James Graham, aired on BBC One at 9pm on Monday, June 13, and will be a six-part series. The second episode will air tomorrow on Tuesday, June 14 - all episodes are around an hour long. The BBC has confirmed filming took place in Nottinghamshire locations such as in the village of Annesley, at Newstead Abbey and also at Newstead station.

In one of the opening scenes, the once world record transfer fee for ex-Nottingham Forest Trevor Francis was mentioned. However, the team was referred to as 'Notts Forest' rather than Nottingham Forest, which left some viewers less than impressed.

Councillor Sally Longford tweeted: "Oh dear, the start of #Sherwood & husband’s hackles risen “Notts Forest”! @NFFC if you know you know!"

BBC reporter Tony Roe said: "‘Notts Forest’ oohs all over Nottinghamshire at that #Sherwood "

Another viewer said: "Notts forest!!! Don’t hold much hope for rest on it…."

"First problem with #Sherwood is referring to us as Notts Forest," one fan wrote. "No one in Nottinghamshire would refer to them as ‘Notts Forest’", another tweet said.

Sherwood is inspired by two murders which took around Annesley Village back in 2004, sparking a huge manhunt by Nottinghamshire Police. Written by award-winning James Graham (whose previous achievements include Finding Neverland), Graham has drawn his inspiration for the series from real-life events in the Nottinghamshire village where he grew up.

The show stars David Morrissey and Lesley Manville and episodes are available on BBC iplayer after they air on the television. The Notts Forest phrase annoys a lot of Nottingham Forest fans - for more information on why, you can click here.
