BBC MasterChef: Bristol dad left sweating after burned celeriac blunder

A dad from Bristol was put through to MasterChef's Knock Out Week despite burning a core element of his main dish. John, who lives with his partner and four children in the city, wowed the judges with the remainder of his quarter-final plates to go through to the final.

Speaking to show hosts John Torode and Greg Wallace, John admitted "never in my wildest dreams" did he think he would wind up in the Masterchef quarter finals. He added it was nice to be acknowledged for his cooking ability. To prove to the judges he wasn't a 'one trick pony', Jon decided not to create a sugar-free dessert - which had become somewhat of a specialty during his time on the show.

The Bristol-based painter and decorator sought to prove it was possible to make delicious desserts without sugar in honour of his daughter, who has type one diabetes. In order to impress the judges with his savory two-course menu, Jon served pan-friend hake with fennel puree and roasted fennel, with an entree of poached chicken breast with crispy chicken skin, celariac fondant, and tarragon hollandaise.

Not everything went to plan though and Jon ended up having to throw away a side of crispy celariac which he had sadly ended up burning. Even without a core element of the dish, Jon served up a full of classic food served well.

On tasting his starter, judges said the Bristolian's dish was "spot on" with a "quite lovely" puree. Longtime Masterchef host John Torode said Jon has put together some "really good flavour combinations" and it was an especially good plate of food coming from an amature chef.

While one taster said his poached chicken breast was on the "dry" side, the panel agreed the plate tasted delicious. But having made it through to the quarter final, all four chefs served up outstanding plates of food and the competition standard was incredibly high.

But John was chosen, alongside fellow contestant Jack, to head through to the next round - the Masterchef Knock Out week where contestants will compete against each other to stay in the competition.
