BBC journalist apologises for announcing Queen was dead

A BBC journalist has apologised for announcing that Queen Elizabeth had died. The 96-year-old monarch is currently seriously ill at her summer estate in Balmoral and is being surrounded by her family.

BBC World News anchor and correspondent Yalda Hakim tweeted that there had been an announcement that the Queen was dead. She later deleted the tweet and sent another message that reads: "I tweeted that there had been an announcement about the death of the Queen. This was incorrect, there has been no announcement, and so I have deleted the tweet. I apologise."

Yalda Hakim has more than 200,000 followers on Twitter.

Hundreds of people shared, commented and retweeted the message of apology.

The Queen's doctors have said she is under medical supervision and they are concerned for her health. She has been forced to cancel a number of public appearances and appointments in recent weeks as well as constitutional duties.

The Queen met with new Prime Minister Liz Truss this week to invite her to form a Government.
