BBC issues statement amid calls for investigation after Alex Belfield jailed

The BBC said it will "continue to provide support" amid calls for an independent investigation after stalker Alex Belfield was jailed in September. The former BBC DJ was found guilty of waging a relentless stalking campaign against BBC Radio Northampton's Bernie Keith, and subjecting TV presenter Jeremy Vine to an "avalanche of hatred".

Appearing at the same court for sentencing on Friday (September 16), Belfield was given a total of five years and 26 weeks in prison, of which he will serve half, on all four charges he was convicted of. The jury found him not guilty of stalking the four other complainants.

The national broadcaster will now be looking at what can be learnt from the experiences of those involved in this case - although an investigation has not yet been announced. A spokesperson said the want to ensure "best support" for staff who may experience the risks of online stalking in the future.

In a statement, the BBC said: "We know this has been very difficult for those involved and we continue to provide support to current and former staff. We also want to learn from this to ensure we offer the best possible support to all colleagues, who may sadly experience the threat and risks of online stalking in the future."
