BBC icon confirmed to join ITV Corrie as George Shuttleworth's 'sassy' sister Glenda

An ITV icon has confirmed she's joining Corrie as undertaker George Shuttleworth's 'fun and sassy' sister Glenda. She says she's dreamed of joining Coronation Street ever since she was young, and now her wishes have all come true.

Jodie Prenger, who became a BBC icon when she won reality show ‘I’d do Anything’ and then starred in the stage play of iconic ITV drama Fat Friends, will appear on the cobbles from August. The 43-year-old actress started filming with the soap this week.

Her 'fun and sassy' character will be joining the street fresh from a cruise ship. But it won't be long before she finds her feet behind the bar of the Rovers.

Speaking about the role, Jodie said: “I know I sound like a soppy sod, but it’s been on my bucket list to be in Coronation Street since I was little. It’s an honour, it truly is a very special moment in my life. To be part of something my family and I have loved for so long. And what a character, oh I have to say, total dream part.

"I can't wait for you all to meet fun and sassy Glenda, George Shuttleworth's sister. I love Tony Maudsley already, what a fella! Your first day on the cobbles is one of the most nerve wrecking experiences you’ll go though and everyone was just so gloriously lovely, kind and welcoming. It was, and is, everything I expected, and more."

Producer Iain MacLeod said: “Glenda sails in fresh from the cruise ships with a whiff of the exotic, quickly making best friends and enemies in equal measure. The character is loads of fun and has echoes of classic Coronation Street females of old. Jodie is a fabulous talent and we are all very excited to have her aboard. She has felt very Corrie since the moment she stepped onto set and I think the viewers will love her.”

things are about to take a turn for the better for George when another familiar face arrives in Weatherfield - his sister Glenda, played by actress and singer Jodie Prenger (ITV)

George Shuttleworth (played by Tony Maudsley) is currently experiencing a harrowing bullying storyline. newcomer Frank Bardsley. The character, played by Simon O'Brien, made his first Weatherfield appearance at the end of last month when he made his way into the Rovers Return where he got chatting to Sean Tully.

But it soon became clear that he and George had a murky past, when Frank was introduced to George at the Rover's Return, and it soon became apparent that they already know each other.

Frank appeared a changed man until George overheard him humming a song he used to mock him when they were children. Viewers are now predicting the story will take some twists and turns - with Jodie's character Glenda arriving on the cobbles.

So what do Corrie fans in store? We'll have to wait and see.
