BBC Happy Valley stars 'don't know ending' as fans 'work out' twist for extended finale

One of the stars of Happy Valley has said he 'doesn't know' how the series will end while another has shut down claims there are 'multiple' endings. Actor Amit Shah has shocked fans of the BBC One drama with her portrayal of pharmacist Faisal Bhatti, who they quickly came to realise wasn't a squeaky clean pharmacist.

It didn't take viewers long to find out that Faisal was in completely over his head and had even been plotting with his neighbour Joanna Hepworth to murder her abusive PE teacher husband Rob. Joanna, played by former Coronation Street star Mollie Winnard, got pharmacist Faisal on board to help her after lying that Rob knew he had been illegally supplying her with diazepam and was on the warpath.

Armed with a loaded syringe, Faisal was fuming when Joanna tried to back out of their plan to kill bullying Rob and in a fit of rage ended up killing her instead, leaving fans' jaws on the floor.

But now, with only one episode left of the third and final series, Amit shared a revelation on the Obsessed with…Happy Valley podcast. "I still don’t know how it all ends up for him because we filmed the final scenes in various different ways," he confessed. However, Rhys Connah, who plays teenager Ryan in the series, has shut down claims that there is more than one ending, instead clarifying that the final scenes have been filmed in different ways.

"A lot of the theories are a bit stupid, so sometimes I do laugh," he told the BBC. "But sometimes when they're saying random stuff, one of them will list five different plot points, all of which happened exactly, and I'm just like…" [keeping a straight face]. But he definitely doesn't know how it ends.

"I do not know exactly how it ends. I did hear somewhere that they've made multiple endings, but that's not true," he said. "What they've done is, as a lot of shows do – there is one ending, but they've filmed it in different ways, different ways of how characters say things, the emotions behind them, the angles, the framing, because how much that stuff can affect a scene is more than most people would think."

It comes as fans think they have worked out a major twist to come in the extended Happy Valley finale, which airs on Sunday, February 5, at 9pm. During the penultimate episode on Sunday night (January 29), viewers got to see the aftermath of Tommy Lee Royce's grand escape.

Elsewhere, Ryan turned up at Ann and his brother Daniel's door, she let rip over a glass of wine and told him Tommy had raped his mum Becky, that he was raised from being a baby following her suicide by his granny Catherine despite never being wanted by the rest of the family.

When Catherine Cawood finally tracked Ryan down, after he did a bunk from his granddad Richard and his wife Ros's house, there was a heart-wrenching moment when Ryan told his granny he loved her. But then, as Daniel, Ann, Clare, Neil, Nevison, Richard and Ros were all hiding, and waiting for news of Tommy's capture, they were completely unaware that Tommy was making direct contact with Ryan via their games consoles after it had already been revealed he was planning a flit to Spain with his son in tow.

Fans think Ryan may be heavily involved in ehe finale (BBC/Lookout Point/Matt Squire)

"What are you gonna do? Are you armed and dangerous?" asked Ryan repeatedly before Tommy revealed his plan for the pair of them to escape to Marbella. But fans think that either Catherine or Tommy could end up dead - at the hands of Ryan.

@courtneytalia33 tweeted: "What if Tommy gets to Catherine, and then Ryan kills him to save his granny #HappyValley." @reallouisdicko said: "Ok, so, either.... 1) Ryan will kill Tommy 2) Tommy will kill (albeit caught in crossfire) Ryan 3) Tommy will seriously injure/ kill Catherine 4) Ryan will save Catherine, but by (see A) killing Tommy See you all next week #HappyValley."

@yipadeedoodah shared: "Tommy Lee Royce gives me the heebie jeebies. My betting is Ryan is going to save Catherine’s life in the finale and kill him off in the impending struggle. Sarah Lancashire deserves ALL of the awards. #HappyValley." @M3lanieJC added: "I think that Ryan, Catherine and TLR find themselves alone... Ryan will kill Tommy and Catherine will take the blame for Ryan #HappyValley."

Clare's name has also been thrown into the mix (BBC/Lookout Point)

But some think the quiet and unasuming Clare Cartwright may get a big moment in the last ever episode. @Mark071932922 said: "#HappyValley I’m calling it. Catherines sister Clare will kill Tommy lee Royce." @jamesgunnwrites commented: "I think it's setting us up for Clare to kill Tommy. Remember this tweet. #HappyValley."

@auntiecazza posted: "#HappyValley. Can’t forget Claire telling Catherine,“he means more to me than you do” re Ryan. I think Claire will save Ryan. Claire will kill TLR. I just hope she doesn’t have to choose between Ryan and Catherine…" @heavenlybetsy added: "Claire will kill Tommy , there I said it #HappyValley."
