BBC give Gentleman Jack fans second season first look with release date days away

The BBC has released a first look trailer for the second season of Gentleman Jack, starring Suranne Jones.

Based on a true story, the Vigil star plays Anne Lister, a lady landowner in 1800s Yorkshire, who embarked on a dangerous romance with another woman.

Suranne is now set to return to screens in a top hat and frock coat in a hotly anticipated second season, which will premiere on the BBC on April 10.

The 19th century period drama will pick back up with the real-life lesbian diarist and the BBC have given fans a glimpse of what they can expect.

The trailer shows Anne and her love interest Ann Walker, played by Peaky Blinders star Sophie Rundle, after they exchanged vows in a private ceremony at the end of the first season.

In the new clip, Anne looks a treat in cool, rebellious 19th century fashion, set against the backdrop of the stunning Yorkshire countryside.

The trailer shows the married couple ready to settle down at Anne's ancestral home of Shibden Hall, as she refuses to keep a low profile as Halifax is on the brink of a revolution.

The newlyweds also manage to fit in a tour of Europe together, despite Ann’s frail health.

According to the official synopsis: “All eyes are on Anne Lister and Ann Walker as they set up home together at Shibden Hall as wife and wife, determined to combine their estates and become a power couple.

“Anne Lister’s entrepreneurial spirit frightens the locals as much as her unconventional love life and, with Halifax on the brink of revolution, her refusal to keep a low profile becomes provocative and dangerous.”

It continues: “Series two will again use the real life diaries of Anne Lister - part of which were written in code - as its source, with every part of Lister’s story based in historical fact and the five million words she wrote in her journals.”

The trailer also teases a potential love triangle between the married couple and Mariana Lawton, Anne Lister's former lover, played by Lydia Leonard.

Gentleman Jack creator Sally Wainwright has said that the new season will put Anne and Ann's romance to the test, saying: “It's about how they negotiate their married life, conspicuously in public, and how they deal with their detractors and the effect that has on their relationship.”

Also returning for the second season are Gemma Whelan as Marian Lister, Gemma Jones as Aunt Anne Lister, and Timothy West as Jeremy Lister.

The second season of Gentleman Jack will premiere on BBC One and BBC iPlayer at 9pm on Sunday, April 10, with new episodes premiering weekly.
