With impressive budgets and gorgeous locations, BBC One's Escape to the Country often shows some beautiful homes. And during the episode shown on Monday, May 1, host Sonali Shah was left amazed by a property in Abergavenny, saying she had "never seen anything like it" during her eight years on the show.
Sonali was helping newlyweds Adam and Gareth, who is from Bangor, escape from the hustle and bustle of London and move to south Wales, where they could commute to both London and Cardiff if needed. During the search, Adam and Gareth liked some of the properties but it was the mystery house that they really fell in love with.
Introducing the mystery house, which was a former Victorian infirmary, Sonali could not hide her amazement. She said: "In eight years of doing this show, which means I've seen dozens of mystery houses, I have never seen anything quite like this."
The property was in need of a lot of renovation work and had three bedrooms, sash windows, fireplaces and 12ft high ceilings on a large secluded plot. Although needing a lot of work the property oozed charm and did have all the essentials - electricity, running water and central heating.
Seeing the house for the first time a shocked Adam said: "Is it the whole thing? How much is it, can we just jump to that part because I don't want to get my heart broken." During filming in July 2021 the property was up for sale for £299,950, which was under Gareth and Adam's £325,000 budget, and the couple decided to put an offer in.
But sadly it wasn't meant to be as their offer was rejected when the seller went with a cash buyer instead. You can keep up to date with the latest TV and showbiz news by signing up to the newsletter here.
