BBC details why VAR turned down Celtic penalty shout vs Rangers

The reason Celtic's first-half penalty shout against Rangers was turned away by VAR has been explained by BBC.

Brendan Rodgers, his players and Hoops fans felt Nick Walsh should've pointed to the spot after a handball by Ben Davies inside the box.

The ball came into the box before being deflected at close range onto the centre-back's hand in the Scottish Cup final 2024 by Kyogo.

John Beaton on VAR took little time to dismiss the case, as play was waved on by Walsh in the Hampden Park sunshine.

Discussing the incident at half time, BBC's analysis panel detailed the reason why a spot kick wasn't awarded.

Host Jonathan Sutherland told viewers: "That is the guidance we've had from VAR, that it was a natural movement. Hence why no penalty was given."

It followed on from pundit Charlie Mulgrew stating: "I don't think it's a penalty, but you see them given in other games. It's a bit of a grey area."

Steven Davis added: "I don't think anybody else of a football background would see that as a penalty. His hand is in a natural position. It's a strange game."

Meanwhile, Philippe Clement has confirmed Borna Barisic will leave Rangers in the summer.

The Ibrox boss admitted the Croatian defender will depart upon the expiry of his contract.

Barisic has been heavily linked with a move to join Turkish Super Lig side Trabzonspor.

And Clement has confirmed he will join a new side in the off-season as he heads for the Ibrox exit.

The Belgian manager announced the news in his pre-match interview ahead of the Scottish Cup final against Celtic as he revealed the looming departure impacted his team selection.

Barisisc is not included in the squad for the cup final with Ridvan Yilmaz starting despite not having full preparations for the fixture.
