BBC Crossfire viewers left 'traumatised' as three-part thriller begins

Keeley Hawes' new drama Crossfire aired for the first time on Tuesday, September 20, and the BBC One thriller has already sent shockwaves through viewers. The hard-hitting series left some viewers "traumatised".

The series, which is not based on a true story, is just three episodes long. In it, Keeley Hawes, 46, plays Jo whose world is turned upside down when gunmen attack the luxurious Spanish hotel she’s holidaying in with family and friends.

Sunbathing on her hotel room balcony in a luxury resort in the Canary Islands, Jo hears shots ring out across the complex. In the BBC synopsis, the outline of the plot is revealed. "Gunmen, out for revenge, have, in an instant, turned a slice of paradise into a terrifying heart-breaking hell". It says that this is a story of "survival and resilience". Adding: "Crossfire is an edge-of-your-seat nail-biting thriller yet also emotional, intimate and relatable. With the unsuspecting holidaymakers and hotel staff forced to make monumental split-second life or death decisions, the consequences will linger long after the final shots are fired."

The Mirror spotted viewer reaction on Twitter. It quoted one person as writing: "Mother of god, just had to turn off new drama #crossfire on BBC1 - way too traumatic for me."

Another added: "Never knew how long I could hold my breath for. Turns out it’s an hour. Just watched @BBCOne #Crossfire! Flip me that was tense!" A third person wrote: "I think I actually just passed away #Crossfire," while a fourth commented: " #crossfire is a bit bloody edge-of-your-seat stressful."

Hawes, a BAFTA TV Award-winning actress has starred in hit shows such as Nottinghamshire Live readers' favourite, Line of Duty, as well as Bodyguard, Ashes to Ashes and It's A Sin.

  • Catch up with the thriller on BBC iPlayer. The series is in three parts with episode two airing at 9.00pm on Wednesday, September 21, and the final episode on Thursday, September 22.
