THE BBC has come in for criticism after initially describing an Irish actor as British during its coverage of the Golden Globes.
The star-studded ceremony took place in Los Angeles on Sunday evening with actor Andrew Scott nominated for his role in the series Ripley.
In an article showing people the famous faces who took to the red carpet, users on Reddit pointed out that Scott, originally from Dublin, was initially described as a “British nominee” in the TV categories.
However, this was later amended so that the caption read: “Other nominees in the TV categories include Irish Ripley star Andrew Scott.”
It’s not the first time that the BBC have made a gaffe along these lines, having previously faced hundreds of complaints for describing Paul Mescal, who is also Irish, as British.
Plenty of Reddit users were quick to poke fun at the BBC, with one joking that Scott’s “Sherlock co-star, Irish actor Benedict Cumberbatch, has demanded an apology from the BBC”.
Another said it was “just weird” that this had happened once again while others shared the screenshot showing that it said "British" in the original caption.
The National has approached the BBC for further comment.
