BBC Call The Midwife: Laura Main's secret split from boyfriend of five years

A Call The Midwife star secretly split from her partner of five years while her character enjoys a successful and sweet marriage on the show. Laura Main, who plays the nun turned nurse Shelagh Turner, secretly split from her fellow actor partner Stephen McGlynn in 2017.

She casually talked about the end of the five-year relationship when talking to the Sunday Post in 2017 saying: "If anyone were to look on the internet they would think I was still in a relationship, but let's just say I am now single."

Laura met theatre actor Stephen when they both acted in the Rodgers & Hammerstein musical State Fair. During the relationship Laura joked about how the couple rarely saw each other due to their work schedules. You can read more Showbiz news here.

The 40-year-old actress has remained tight-lipped about the split, not revealing many details but has said she would like children one day if the right person came along.

Laura was born in Aberdeen and studied history at the University of Aberdeen before attending the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art in London.

She has been performing on stage all her life from being Louisa Von Trapp in The Sound of Music at the age of 15 to joining the musical society while at university. The stage star has had roles with the Royal Shakespeare Company including the understudy for Alice in Alice in Wonderland.

Her other stage roles include Princess Fiona in Shrek the Musical which toured the UK in 2017 and Juliet in Romeo and Juliet.

In 2012 she joined Call the Midwife and has remained in that role ever since as her character Shelagh swapped from being a nun to a nurse in the name of love.

Call The Midwife is on BBC1 on Christmas Day at 7.55pm
