BBC Breakfast weather presenter Carol Kirkwood confirms engagement live on air

Carol Kirkwood was congratulated by her colleagues after confirming live on air that she is engaged.

The big reveal came as the Scottish weather presenter, 59, chatted to BBC Breakfast hosts Sally Nugent and Jon Kay as she reported from the Chelsea Flower Show.

Nugent teased: "I’m a bit concerned about how you’re standing up with a giant rock on that left hand!

"Thank you Sal! It is rather nice. I got engaged!" Kirkwood beamed as she flashed her ring. "It’s the happiest news! We are so, so delighted.”

“Congratulations,” Nugent continued. "Can we confirm to the nation what has happened?"

"Oh thank you! I think you just have Sally," Kirkwood laughed. "We got engaged when we were on holiday. So it’s lovely news and we’re both thrilled. Thank you!"

"We’re all so chuffed for you Carol, on behalf of everyone here and everyone at home too," Kay added, followed by the whole studio erupting in applause.

While happily engaged, she has yet to set a date for the wedding, saying there are “no plans afoot yet.”

Kirkwood was a contestant in the 2015 series of BBC One’s Strictly Come Dancing and was partnered with Pasha Kovalev.

This will be the second trip down the aisle for the TV personality as she was previously married to field hockey player Jimmy Kirkwood from 1990 until 2008.

Kirkwood confirmed she had found love again in 2021, 13 years after her divorce.

She has kept the identity of her boyfriend very close to her chest. Speaking about him to Prima in the past, she said: "I don’t want to say too much about my boyfriend, but I will say that he is very kind and very funny - he’s always making me laugh. And extremely handsome, as well.

"He always makes me a cup of tea before I go to work in the morning, which is very romantic - it’s 2.45am and he often leaves me a little love note for when I come home from work. That, to me, is worth a million red roses."
