BBC Breakfast host calls out fake This Morning friendships amid Phil and Holly 'feud'

BBC Breakfast host Roger Johnson claimed This Morning viewers can "see through fake" as he discussed Phillip Schofield's exit from the ITV show.

On Sunday, BBC Breakfast welcomed TV critic Scott Bryan onto the show after the news broke that Phillip would be stepping down while his former co-host Holly Willoughby would remain on the flagship programme.

Scott told the BBC Breakfast host that the success of This Morning depends on the rapport between the two presenters.

Roger replied: “That affection was genuine between them, wasn’t it? You could tell it was built on a really genuine friendship.”

Scott argued that viewers began to suspect their friendship was starting to unravel.

Roger discussed the relationship between presenters on This Morning (BBC)

He said: “When viewers start to become sceptical of a relationship on-screen, whether a friendship on-screen is actually authentic, it’s very hard to convince them otherwise.”

The TV went on to address possible replacements for Phillip, pointing out the bond between the two presenters hosting This Morning cannot be faked.

“Trying to have that (authenticity) on one of the most popular daytime shows and have that match the longevity and the success it’s had with Phillip Schofield over the past few years, is certainly going to be a hard thing to pull off," he said.

Roger continued: “Yeah the viewers are smart you know. They can see through fake, can’t they? As you say."

Philip leaves behind former co-host Holly (ITV)

On Saturday, ITV confirmed Phillip had filmed his final episode presenting This Morning after more than 20 years.

In a statement, Phillip said: “I have always been proud to cover fascinating stories on This Morning. But recently, This Morning itself has become the story.

“Throughout my career in TV – including the very difficult last few days – I have always done my best to be honourable and kind. I understand that ITV has decided the current situation can’t go on, and I want to do what I can to protect the show that I love.

“So I have agreed to step down from This Morning with immediate effect, in the hope that the show can move forward to a bright future. I’d like to thank everyone who has supported me – especially This Morning’s amazing viewers – and I’ll see you all for the Soap Awards next month.”

Holly Willoughby added: “It’s been over 13 great years presenting This Morning with Phil and I want to take this opportunity to thank him for all of his knowledge, his experience and his humour. The sofa won’t feel the same without him.”
