BBC Breakfast announce popular presenter as Dan Walker’s replacement

The BBC has confirmed Jon Kay as Dan Walker's replacement on BBC Breakfast.

Jon will sit alongside Sally Nugent on the famous red sofa each weekday morning follow Dan's exit back in May.

The news of Jon's appointment being announced came at the same time it was confirmed Victoria Derbyshire will become become joint lead presenter on Newsnight in September.

Dan took to Twitter to wish his successor well in his former role - with Jon telling the Channel 5 star he had "set a very high bar".

"I’m over the moon to become the new regular presenter of BBC Breakfast and I’m looking forward to bringing our brilliant viewers the very latest news each morning alongside my good friend Sally and the rest of the team," Jon said in a statement as the news was revealed.

"Sitting on the famous red sofa is a real privilege while covering the stories and issues that matter to our audience – home and abroad."

As the news broke, Dan took to Twitter to share: "Brilliant news. Congratulations @jonkay01. Great bloke, top presenter and much loved by the #BBCBreakfast team."

"Thanks so much, Dan," Jon replied via a quote-tweet. "You set a very high bar, my friend."

Former Strictly Come Dancing star Dan bid farewell to the BBC - and early mornings - in order to lead the news team in the evenings over on Channel 5.

Dan announced his exit from the BBC in April this year, after stating that the offer to join Channel 5 was an opportunity that doesn't "come around very often".

Speaking about his pending exit at the time, the broadcaster said: "I have a little bit of news for you. In the next few weeks, I'm going to be leaving BBC Breakfast and moving to 5 News and to Channel 5.

"I'm really excited but this has also been a massive decision for me because I love BBC Breakfast, I love working alongside Sally and I love the team there.

"But Channel 5 came with big ambitions, with big plans and I don't think opportunities like this come around very often and I can't wait.

"I've also had the incredible privilege of working on some iconic programmes over the last few years, both at the BBC and elsewhere.

"And what I love about this deal is I not only get to present the news, but also host a whole range of new programmes right across the channel.

"And what an honour to step into the shoes of Sian Williams. I know how popular she is with both the team and also the audience, so all I can say is I will do my best to maintain her incredibly high standards.

"Thank you for watching and I'll see you soon on a TV screen somewhere."

Victoria Derbyshire also has a new role (BBC)

Alongside Jon being announced as Dan's replacement, Victoria Derbyshire was also confirmed to have a new gig within the BBC.

"I am so delighted to be joining the legend that is Kirsty Wark and the talented Newsnight team under new and ambitious leadership," the one-time I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here! star stated as it was confirmed she would be co-presenting the political show come September.

"This is a special opportunity to take on one of the best jobs in British journalism and help shape the programme’s future.

"I can’t wait to champion more stories about people’s lives while holding those who represent them to account."

Jonathan Munro, Interim Director of BBC News, said of both appointments: "It’s fantastic to be appointing two such talented presenters to start and finish the day on two of our most important news programmes.

"Jon’s a hugely experienced journalist who’s established himself as a favourite with BBC Breakfast viewers, and Victoria’s a formidable interviewer with an amazing connection to her audiences. Congratulations to both of them."
