BBC Bargain Hunt item bought for £8 gets bids 'in the hundreds'

A Bargain Hunt item bought for £8 received bids in the "hundreds" in the latest episode.

On Thursday, host Natasha Raskin Sharp welcomed another four contestants to the show. Married couple Clive and Debbie, both retired, were in red jackets, while another married couple, David and Vijaya, who are a finance director and accountant respectively, made up the Blue Team.

Each team was given £300 to shop at a sale at Oswestry Showground, with whoever made the biggest profit, or smallest loss, to be declared the winner.

The Red Team made an overall profit of £10, after selling a bird bath, a pair of bottle coasters, a trunk, and a silver photo frame from the late 19th century. But would the Blue Team be able to top their gains?

David and Vijaya's cutlery set made a £5 profit, while their inkwell stand made a £5 loss, leaving them with a net profit of nothing. But when it came to their their item, a royal commemorative mug bought for £8, the bids were coming in in the hundreds thanks to the auctioneer's sense of humour.

The first bid was £5, to which the auctioneer said: "500, yes we have 500 pence. Do I see 6?", before he then saw bids of "600", "700" and "800". The item finally sold for £10, or 1000 pence as he put it.

After selling their bonus item, chosen by expert Kate Bliss, the Blue Team had an overall profit of £18, meaning they won today's challenge.
