BBC Antiques Roadshow guest told toys he found in 'random box' worth over £3,000

An Antiques Roadshow guest was delighted to learn items he found in a "mixed-up box" were worth £3,000.

Expert Judith Miller was presented with several Meccano pieces. Meccano is a brand of model construction devised by inventor Frank Hornby.

Mr Hornby, born in 1863 in Maghull, created Meccano, as well as founding the model railway company which bears his name and Dinky Toys.

He began his illustrious career by making toys for his own children and went on to become a millionaire and MP for Everton. The Meccano company headquarters was based in Binns Road, Liverpool, for more than 60 years.

Given its interesting history, Judith wanted to know more about how the guest obtained the items. Judith asked: "How did you start your interest in Meccano?"

The guest said: "Well, just being a young boy and being an only child you were, on a rainy day, given a box of Meccano and you'd create and you can make so many things, I just loved it."

The guest had brought with him three items. The first was a Number Two Meccano from the 1930s. The guest added: "The interesting thing about that is, it's made in Paris, but it was always Liverpool on the stickers on the back, and you can see there the Paris logo on it."

The second and third items were construction sets. The guest said: "I was down in Portobello and that was actually in boxes, it was just mixed-up. The old chap wanted £85 and I said, "OK, I'll take that," brought it back and restrung it, putting it back the way it was."

Judith said: "These are rare now. This [pointing to the car] is a rare model, it is highly desirable and the interesting thing is that a lot of collectors of this type of model or construction are getting of a certain age - they'll pay."

Judith said in total the collection would be worth "in excess" of £3,000, which appeared to surprise the guest.
