Bayern Munich star ruled out of Scotland opener with recurring illness

It's been reported that midfielder Aleksandar Pavlovic will miss Germany's opening Euro 2024 group-stage match against Scotland this Friday due to a recurring infection.

As shared by Sky's Florian Plettenberg on X (formerly Twitter), Pavlovic is said to suffer from recurring tonsillitis which has caused the 20-year-old to fall ill with an infection.

As noted by Plettenberg, Pavlovic hopes to rejoin the squad when he's fit – but this is all dependent on the player's recovery.

Plettenberg says that the Bayern Munich star's recovery is being reviewed day-to-day, but it would appear the young midfielder will not feature against Scotland in the competition's Group A opener this weekend.

Whether or not Pavlovic would have featured against Scotland is up for debate, however it's another set-back for Germany as the hosts prepare for Euro '24. Earlier this week, Germany stars were caught up in a heated training clash four days ahead of the competition's start date.

From the Scotland camp, on the other hand, Celtic captain Callum McGregor spoke about the accelerated road to recovery that allowed him to finish his club commitments on top last month, and make the journey to Germany to play for his country.

He said: "When we got the scan, it was bad news, it was pretty much season over but with determination and everything that there was still to play for and obviously having an eye on [Euro 2024] as well, sometimes the mind can do crazy things for you and will you back to a point when you can get yourself back fit.

"I'm willing to put myself through anything for the team to get success and that's just the way that I am. I'm so glad that it turned out the way it did. In football, fortune favours the brave as well a little bit."
