Bayern Munich eye Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku as potential Robert Lewandowski replacement

Bayern Munich are eyeing a move for Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku this summer as a potential replacement for Robert Lewandowski, according to reports. The Poland international has already expressed his desire to leave the Bavarian club this summer, with Barcelona heavily linked.

The interest in Lukaku comes after a difficult season for the Belgian. Last summer saw him make the club-record transfer back to Stamford Bridge, costing upwards of £100million as Thomas Tuchel searched for a goal-scoring striker.

While the 29-year-old ended the campaign as the top scorer across all competitions, his 15 goals were below the expectations set by his arrival. Discussing his troubles back in May, Tuchel said: “Romelu has been scoring goals since he was six years old. It is in his body.

“This is what I tell him all the time - trust your body, trust your brain, trust your instincts. You never forget how to score, but he needs a spark, and hopefully, this [a performance against Wolves] was it.

“Many strikers, once they start thinking it is not a good thing because they should trust their instincts. It starts a cycle where it is hard to climb out. But Romelu is very committed in training and as a team player. That is what we love about him. No ego at all.”

However, following his turbulent campaign, the forward has been linked with a move away from the club as part of an overhaul to Tuchel’s attacking options. Former club Inter Milan have been one of the sides reportedly interested in a return, though his transfer fee from one-year ago could prove a problem.

And amid such links, Mundo Deportivo reports that Bayern Munich are monitoring Lukaku for a potential move, should Robert Lewandowski leave the club. The Poland international announced his desire to leave, with links to Barcelona, while he has one-year remaining on his contract.

It remains unclear whether an approach is feasible for the German club, however, it could allow Tuchel more room to change his squad over the summer if a suitable bid is received.
