Bayern Munich have confirmed Vincent Kompany as their new manager on a three-year deal.
The former Manchester City captain takes his third managerial role, after time with Anderlecht and Burnley. He guided the Clarets to the Championship title in his first season but could not stop the club being relegated from the Premier League the following year.
Burnley said in a statement: "Whilst we were initially confident in retaining our manager, the changing dynamics of the situation made this impossible.
"We understand the allure and prestige of a club like Bayern Munich and respect Vincent's ambition to explore new opportunities."
Kompany said: “I'm looking forward to the challenge of FC Bayern. It's a great honour to be able to work for this club - FC Bayern is an institution in international football.
“As a coach, you have to stand for what you are as a character: I love having the ball, being creative - but we also have to be aggressive and courageous on the pitch. I'm now looking forward to the basics: working with the players, building a team. Once the basis is right, success will follow."
Bayern CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen added: "We all at the club agree that Vincent Kompany is the right coach for FC Bayern and are very much looking forward to working with him."
The German club have been searching for a new manager ever since Thomas Tuchel confirmed in February he was leaving this summer, and suffered multiple rejections from the likes of Julian Nagelsmann, Ralf Rangnick, Roger Schmidt and Xabi Alonso.
An approach for Oliver Glasner was also rejected by Crystal Palace, while both Julen Lopetegui, now at West Ham, and Aston Villa’s Unai Emery informed them they wanted to work in the Premier League.
Bayern’s struggles led to them trying to persuade Tuchel to stay, but he rejected them and is keen to secure a job in England, leaving them to turn to Kompany
