Bayern Munich confirm it is 'possible' Manchester United target Matthijs De Ligt leaves this summer

Uli Hoeness has confirmed defender Matthijs De Ligt could leave Bayern Munich this summer amid links with a move to Manchester United.

The Red Devils have already signed Leny Yoro to strengthen their defence this summer, with the former Lille centre-back making his debut during the 2-0 win over Rangers in Edinburgh on Saturday.

Still, they continue to be linked with more defensive signings, with Raphael Varane having left the club on a free transfer earlier this summer.

De Ligt worked alongside manager Erik ten Hag at Ajax and has since seen competition for places increase at the Allianz Arena following Bayern’s move for former Stuttgart defender Hiroki Ito.

Jarrad Brainthwaite has also been touted as a United target but the Manchester giants are reportedly some way off Everton’s valuation of the defender.

Hoeness, who is the honorary president at Bayern, suggested the club could sell a defender this summer and talked up the connections between De Ligt and United.

“It’s possible that a defender will leave,” he told Sky Sports Germany.

“I would have no problem if he stays. Personally, I would not sell [Dayot] Upamecano.”

Ten Hag, meanwhile, confirmed his interest in the Netherlands international during an interview with Dutch outlet AD earlier this week.

“It remains to be seen whether Matthijs de Ligt will come, I know him well,” he said.

“I wanted to sign him two years ago but at that time, he was already very far along to join Bayern. Believe it or not, his name did not come from me in the process.”
