McDonald’s (MCD) -) is the top fast-food chain in just about every aspect. It’s fast, convenient, and inexpensive, relatively speaking. It’s a global leader in its industry, but what about the aspects where it is not the leader.
While McDonald’s is famous for its burgers and fries, it’s also famous for its ice cream machine always being broken. That is not necessarily what the leading fast-food chain wants to be known for, but here we are.
You’d think that an organization as big McDonald’s could work through its ice cream machine difficulties, but without an ice cream machine technician onsite, it’s going to continue to be an issue, and it happens so frequently it's now a meme everyone can get behind, even McDonalds, according to Mashed.
In an attempt to bring a new McFlurry flavor, McDonald’s brought out a new one in April, Strawberry Shortcake McFlurry. This flavor, if you were lucky enough to have it, was around until July, and then it’s gone.
McDonald’s is also known for its consistency, and with the ice cream machines being down everywhere if anything, it’s consistent. So, while McDonald’s fans fume over not being able to get their McFlurry with their meal, it leaves a window of opportunity elsewhere.
McDonald’s Failure Leaves Room for Rival
When McDonald’s ice cream machine is in operation, its creamy treats are a delight, but it’s a gamble on whether or not the ice cream machine gods are smiling down on that particular machine the time you want to enjoy a McFlurry. This is where ice cream treat rival Baskin Robbins has stepped up.
Inspire Brands’ Baskin-Robbins announced that this National Ice Cream Month it was putting a black and white spin on its delicious treats, with Mondelez International's (MDLZ) -) Oreo cookies. For a limited time, Baskin-Robbins has two new cool treats for the summer. The new Oreo Mega Stuf Cone and Oreo Mega Stuf Cappuccino Blast.
The Oreo Mega Stuf Cone is Baskin-Robbins' signature ice cream with Oreo Cookies mixed in, scooped into an Oreo waffle cone, that has been drizzled in the Oreo cream filling, topped with whipped cream and Oreo cookie chunks. The Oreo Mega Stuf cookie, its everything you love from a regular Oreo cookie, but with more than double the cream filling, however less filling than the Most Stuf Oreo cream filling.
If you want to drink your dessert and get your caffeine fix at the same time, Baskin-Robbins has your back with the new Oreo Mega Stuf Cappuccino Blast, a frozen coffee mixed with Oreo Cookies ‘n Cream Ice Cream, topped with whipped cream, Oreo crème drizzle and more Oreo cookie chunks.

Both of these Oreo treats are available at participating Baskin-Robbins locations across the country for a limited time only, while supplies last.
McDonald’s Keeps Bringing the Treats
Even with the operations nightmares with its ice cream machines either not working or constantly receiving routine maintenance -- which takes around four hours to complete -- McDonald’s is bringing customers a new flavor to try. If customers are lucky enough to catch the machine working, they could try out the limited-time flavors.
McDonald’s tested a new flavor in a California market, according to MSN, with a blend of peanut butter, cookies and chocolate in the vanilla McFlurry Ice Cream, and reviews of the Peanut Butter Crunch McFlurry were positive. Whether it will make it to the national menu as a limited-time offer has yet to be determined.
The McDonald’s McFlurry flavors that have hit the menu are Oreo, Heath Bar, Nestle Crunch, M&M’s and Butterfinger. While the two that are on the menu currently are M&M and Oreo McFlurry. The dessert menu at McDonald’s has also tested unique flavors like Boston Cream, Chicken n’ Waffles, Stroopwafel, Snickerdoodle, and Durian and Bubblegum Squash, according to Today.
One fan favorite flavor makes an annual appearance on the menu close to St. Patrick’s Day, the Oreo Shamrock Shake. It originally debuted in 2020. The McDonald’s Shamrock Shake itself has been around a lot longer.
