Basic shop test shows supermarket has gone from cheapest to most expensive

The UK's 'most value for money' supermarket now sits at the most expensive just six weeks later - as the cost of living crisis continues to strike Britons monetarily. Prices on everyday household products are continuing to steadily rise, while millions of households across the nation struggle to make ends meet.

As inflation continues to bolster, The Manchester Evening News have returned to the six main supermarkets and tallied up the bill for its eight most common items. For example, two pints of milk, a loaf of bread, coffee, teabags, butter, beans, chicken breasts and mince have all reached double figures in each of the stores for the first time.

The receipts from identical shops in May have been compared, and it's terrible news for those who do their weekly shop at Morrisons. Although the leading retailer was ranked as the most cost effective just six weeks ago, the tables have flipped and it now ranks as the most expensive - with prices still climbing.

As one of three supermarkets to increase prices this week alone, Morrisons has gone from £9.78 to £11.15 over the last month and a half.

This is an increase of 14 per cent - with Savers Coffee rising from 70p to 85p for a 100g pack, as well as its Savers beans up by 4p from 21p to 25p. High costs for meat have also contributed to the de-ranking - with chicken at £2.49 per 300g pack, and mince at £2.19 for 500g being dubbed the most expensive of all compared.

Elsewhere, chicken has increased at Sainsbury's this week from £2.40 to £2.50 - putting them almost on par with Morrisons for the particular product. Aldi and Lidl remain cheapest for chicken at £2.09 per pack, while Asda's new Just Essentials range mince is stealing the show at a budget £1.69.

Lidl also remains the cheapest store overall, coming in a £10.01 for the shopping bag - closely followed by Asda's £10.03 and Tesco's £10.32. A 20p hike on the price of Aldi teabags sees them slip to fourth position, followed by Sainsbury's at £10.54 (61p cheaper than Morrisons.

The only slight difference in sizes is the baked beans, which range from 400g in Sainsbury's and 410g in Asda and Morrisons, to the standard 420g at Aldi, Lidl and Tesco. While Asda's pack of chicken is larger, the MEN worked out the equivalency for a fairer comparison.

A Morrisons spokesperson said: "We know that this is a very tough time for customers and so one of the recent changes we have made is to improve our My Morrisons loyalty scheme. Customers who are part of it will be rewarded with instant offers when they shop to help them save money."
