The Bangladesh Army issued a rejoinder today accusing India Today of publishing a report based on “false and fabricated information”.
The report in question, headlined “Coup in Bangladesh against Yunus? Army holds emergency meeting”, was published earlier today. It quoted “sources” to say Bangladesh “may see a military takeover soon, with a possibility of the army removing interim government chief Muhammad Yunus and assuming control”. The story said the army held an “emergency meeting” today that signalled “potential major developments in the coming days”.
The army’s press release slammed the report as a “glaring example of journalistic malpractice and the decline of a once-reputed news outlet into a purveyor of disinformation”. Accusing India Today’s report of lacking credible sources, the Bangladesh army called it “yet another attempt to spread baseless rumors about the Bangladesh Army”. It also said the claims of an “impending coup” were “entirely deceitful”.
“This is not the first time India Today has resorted to spreading false information about the Bangladesh Army. A similar pattern of misleading and factually incorrect story was exposed and debunked in a rejoinder we issued on March 11, 2025. The fact that such false narratives continue to be propagated is a concerning reflection of the editorial practices at India Today, which appear to have shifted from reporting facts to generating sensationalism at the cost of truth,” the army said.
It urged all media outlets, including India Today, to “refrain from publishing unfounded and harmful claims that only serve to create unnecessary divisions and mistrust between people of these two great nations”.
