Barry Robson is set to get the chance to try and seal Aberdeen's European return.
The Dons board have gone through a thorough interview process and the interim boss is poised to get the nod for the rest of the season. Talks are ongoing with Robson to try to strike a deal following initial discussions with chief executive Alan Burrows last week.
Robson has stepped up and dragged Aberdeen from the bottom six back into a direct fight for third place. Aberdeen are currently fourth and that would guarantee European football next season although fifth would also come into play if Celtic or Rangers was to win the Scottish Cup. The interim boss has won four out of his six games in interim charge and the Dons are in a good run of form, ahead of the weekend trip to St Johnstone.
He has won the last three games on the bounce and victory was against third-placed Hearts, which cut their lead to just four points. He has also brought in an experienced No. 2 in Steve Agnew and has the clear backing from his dressing room and a lot of the Red Army. The move would also allow the Pittodrie hierarchy to assess the situation and look at the managerial situation again in the summer.
Aberdeen have been looking for a boss since Jim Goodwin departed at the end of January. Initial discussions were held with Chris Wilder and Ricardo Rodriguez, amongst others, and the camps of the likes of former Copenhagen boss Jess Thorup was also sounded out before the Dons whittled their final shortlist down.
During that time, Robson has more than steadied the ship and got the club looking up rather than down and he is now set to get the chance to steer it until the end of the season at least.
