Barry Robson is serious Aberdeen manager contender as Dave Cormack set to hand caretaker lengthy audition

Barry Robson is under serious consideration to land the Aberdeen job on a permanent basis.

The U18s boss has been put in charge of the first team until the Pittodrie board decide on their next appointment. The Aberdeen hierarchy have been inundated with applicants for their vacant post, with candidates boasting Premier League, English Championship, Scottish Premiership and even international experience. And they have already started to narrow down their search. Early favourite Chris Wilder won’t be among the names despite initial talks with the former Middlesbrough and Sheffield United boss.

Interim boss Robson has always been non-committal when asked whether he would be keen on the job in his own right. Chairman Dave Cormack and his fellow directors, however, have been impressed with the way Robson has held the fort since Jim Goodwin was sacked. The former Scotland star has also moved to bring in an experienced No. 2 in Steve Agnew and guided the team back to winning ways against Motherwell last time out.

Robson is expected to be in charge for next weekend’s trip to Celtic and is likely to be given an extended run in the dugout. If he can get the team back into the European fight then it could well see him remain in charge in the longer term, even until the end of the season.

The Dons board are also aware of the job he has done in the background in helping develop the cream of the Dons’ youth academy, the likes of Connor Barron, Ryan Duncan and recent debutant Alfie Bavidge. Robson also fits into the Aberdeen DNA. His under-age sides are known for playing good, attacking football.

The youth academy remains a central pillar of Aberdeen’s philosophy and they know it is the best way for the club to develop and grow. That has been shown as the likes of Scott McKenna and Calvin Ramsay have both come through the ranks and been sold on for big-money to Nottingham Forest and Liverpool, respectively.

Aberdeen have invested heavily in their academy and their Cormack Park facility and the next manager will be expected to create a pathway for the next generation of talent and Robson certainly fits that bill.
