It's Scottish Cup weekend but the upcoming Viaplay Cup Final is very much on the minds of Old Firm fans.
The Glasgow giants will collide at Hampden in two weeks and it’s Rangers fans who reckon their team can expose Ange Postecoglou’s Celtic. Martin MacDonald emailed: “Can anyone tell me ONE game, just one, where Ange has beaten a team that he wasn’t hugely advantaged financially and expected to beat?
“Similar examples to admire would be Rangers vs Dortmund, Leipzig, Porto etc. Is Angeball so limited tactically that any decent team simply outplays them? It looks that way. When an improving Rangers wins the upcoming Viaplay Cup Final, then surely the limitations of Ange’s Celtic against decent teams will be clear to see.” Alan Flett emailed: “Postecoglu is based on the fact that he wipes the floor with SPFL dross on a weekly basis but never beats anyone that he’s not expected to beat. He could muster just two points from a pretty favourable Champions League group, and was outclassed home and away by the same RB Leipzig side who were beaten by Rangers last season.”
Joe Sneddon, via email, said: “Bealemania is about to take over Scottish football and no amount of Money will stop it so my advice to my fellow Rangers fans get yourself a Ticket to Ride”. Celtic, you might need some Help from Dermot Desmond.”
But Hoops fan Eddie Easson, Ballingry, said: “For once Barry Ferguson is spot on. He is like every Rangers supporter and he would love to see the back of Big Ange. Sadly the faithful would never admit to it.” Postecoglou has been linked with Leeds United this week but his assistant has come in for praise. Henry Moffat, Stirling, said: “Well done to John Kennedy who has played a massive part in the recent success of this team and also been hugely influential in helping the manager integrate in a new club and culture. John has done a fantastic job.”
St Johnstone director of football Gus McPherson hit back at Gers boss Mick Beale for slaughtering the McDiarmid pitch. But Dr Robert S Pender, via email, said: “The pitch is a total disgrace. Our local council park has five games per week played on it and it is 200 percent better.”
Gary Stevenson, Newtonhill, said: “Are we not allowed to tell the truth anymore? Beale is an honest hard working man who gives straight answers when approached.” Dundee United and Livingston have opted to turn off the VAR this weekend and save a few quid in the Scottish Cup.
But Bob Sheridan, via email, said: “What a joke VAR has become now-clubs can say we can’t afford it so it won’t be used. It all falls back to the referee making decisions. Remember those days when all the clubs shouted for a better fairer system to reduce the number of dodgy decisions?
“Does this mean only Rangers and Celtic will have VAR as they can afford it? Surely this creates an uneven playing system Other countries must be laughing at us.”
Davy Matson emailed: “VAR has already been used at both Tannadice and the Tony Macaroni Arena. Why isn’t it available for cup games? Utter shambles all in or all out.”
Aberdeen are still in the hunt for a new boss but Dwight Yorke’s bold claims when chucking his hat into the ring haven’t hit the mark. Tom Paterson, Falkirk, said: I had to laugh at Yorke talking about winning the title with Aberdeen. That statement shows he knows nothing about the SPFL. He’s in cloud cuckoo land.” Mind you, that might make Yorke perfect for the madcap world of Scottish football.
