Barry Ferguson tells Rangers critics to lay off Ibrox star as Morelos told form 'ain't good enough'

Barry Ferguson has demanded more from Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos - as he pleads for James Sands to be cut some slack.

The Colombian striker scored his third goal of the season against Aberdeen at the weekend but has been second choice striker to Antonio Colak this season. That's off the back of attitude and fitness concerns in August and his form since has not been stellar.

Now Morelos is in the final year of his deal at Rangers, former Ibrox captain Ferguson told Go Radio that the club's best forward needs to up his game: "I am more frustrated with him. He's a terrific number nine. But it isn't good enough from him. Rangers need him. That is the feeling amongst the Rangers fans, disappointment, frustration. For a player of that quality, it ain't good enough. But hopefully he can get back on form as Rangers need him. I honestly still believe that he is the best number nine at Rangers at this moment in time."

One player who escapes Ferguson's critique is Sands, who has stepped in to both central defence and midfield this term. He's been impressed by the American.

The former midfielder added: "I thought he was terrific against Aberdeen. He was my Man of the Match. I think he's come in for unfair criticism at times.

"He is playing centre-back which is not his natural position. For me, he is a good player is James Sands and I believe some of the criticism has been way over the board."
