Barry Ferguson responds to Jose Mourinho's Philippe Clement comments

Interim Rangers head coach Barry Ferguson has responded to Jose Mourinho's comments about his predecessor, Philippe Clement.

When the Ibrox club were initially drawn against Fenerbahce in the last 16 of the Europa League, Clement went on record and claimed that Mourinho's style was too defensive.

The legendary Portuguese manager then spoke about the Belgian today.

When asked about Clement, Mourinho promptly responded: "Do you think I'm going to comment on, what's his name? Philippe Clement?

"I'm not going to answer. Do you want to ask me another question?"

Then, in his press conference in Istanbul this evening, current Rangers boss Ferguson was directly quizzed on the debacle: "That's up to other people to decide what they think of Mourinho," he said.

"He's a top-class manager, and he's won so many titles, and he's managed at so many top teams."

Hugely experienced at European level, Mourinho has won all three of UEFA's major club tournaments.

Now in charge of Fenerbahce, he and his side will have realistic ambitions of winning the Europa League this season.

Rangers were eliminated from the competition at this point last term, although Ferguson thinks his team's finest displays have come in Europe in 2024/25: "I've been at all the games this season, home and away, and certainly some of the best performances this season have been in the Europa League," he said.

"There's no doubt about that. I'm not going to hide away from the fact that they're [Fenerbache] showing their best. And I think we're coming up against a different level of them, honestly, after watching so much of Fenerbahce over the last three or four days.

"But listen, they've proved that at the highest level they can compete. They know that. And I'll expect that same sort of performance tomorrow."
