Barry Ferguson picks guaranteed Rangers starter v Liverpool as McGregor hailed 'different level'

Barry Ferguson expects some changes when Rangers host Liverpool at Ibrox next week - but top level Allan McGregor is one who will definitely feature.

The 40-year-old goalkeeper saved Giovanni van Bronckhorst's side from a hiding in their 2-0 Champions League Group C loss on Tuesday. At the halfway point of their six-game stretch against the Reds, Ajax and Napoli, Rangers are bottom of their group having not scored a goal.

A big response is needed against Liverpool and McGregor is one player who could be key.

Former captain Ferguson believes that despite not starting the season as number one with Jon McLaughlin preferred, the veteran has proved his elite quality few can match. He wrote in his Daily Record column: "There might also be a change of personnel in the middle of the bench where energy and tactical nous will be vital. But one place that won’t be changed is between the sticks.

"I couldn’t understand why McGregor lost his place for 11 games at the start of the season and that is no disrespect to Jon McLaughlin, who is a very good keeper. But there are levels. Allan is on a different level to most goalkeepers and proved it yet again at Anfield.

"He’s the best Rangers have got and those 10 outfield players will be delighted to have someone like him at their backs. He’ll be needed on Wednesday night, without a doubt.

"But so too will every player in a blue shirt. They’ll have to play one of the games of their lives and probably without seeing much of the ball, but if they can take at least that point, their destiny is likely to be in their own hands."
