Barry Ferguson names Rangers top transfer priority as he hands Michael Beale 3 crucial signing demands

Barry Ferguson wants to see Rangers sign a "dominating playmaker" in midfield this month, in addition to Todd Cantwell and a new striker.

The Ibrox side have been heavily linked with Belgian midfielder Nicolas Raskin although Record Sport understands reports of a medical are wide of the mark at this stage. He could fill the role Ferguson wants to see come in this month though as he wants another signing in the engine room to take up the mantle Steven Davis once held.

There is still a role for Ryan Jack to play though as Ferguson told Go Radio: "I think Rangers need to sign a real dominating playmaker in midfield, like another Steven Davis. But I think Ryan Jack still has a big part to play." Ferguson is also keen to see the club get a deal for Cantwell over the line and he reckons he may be one of a couple of signings announced early next week.

He added: "Michael Beale's made his pitch (to Cantwell) and looked him in the eye, he's done his part now. It's down to whoever's above to agree a fee and agree the salary et cetera. I think you'll see one or two at the start of the week, I'd be very surprised if that's not the case."

Writing in his Record Sport column on Friday, Ferguson named Hibs' Kevin Nisbet and Hearts' Lawrence Shankland as two potential signings up front. And he elaborated that it would be "crazy" if the Edinburgh strike duo are not under consideration.

He added: "I think it would be crazy if they're not casting an eye over both of them. Rangers have always had Scottish strikers, in Billy Dodds, Kris Boyd, Kenny Miller, Steven Thompson, Steven Naismith.

"These guys came into Rangers and did the hardest thing, scored goals. That's why I brought that up in my Record Sport column.

"Nisbet's come back from his injury and looks as if he's never been away, some of his finishing has been unbelievable. I'll not be in the good books of Hibs and Hearts here but Lawrence Shankland, again, he's come back a better player from his spell in Belgium.

"He looks to have gone up a level or two. Clubs like Rangers and Celtic would be crazy to ignore what these players are doing."
