Barry Ferguson in scathing Rangers verdict as former Ibrox captain blasts 'lack of responsibility'

Barry Ferguson believes there was a lack of responsibility among the Rangers team after they were on the end of an astonishing 7-1 loss to Liverpool in the Champions League on Wednesday.

The Light Blues went in at half time with the scoreline 1-1 but completely capitulated in the second half as the English Premier League giants giants scored six goals without reply, including a six minute and 12 second hat-trick from substitute Mo Salah. And the former Ibrox captain told the Go Radio Football Show that he was left astonished at the way Gio van Bronckhorst's men allowed the last third of the game to pan out.

"I think it was the manner of the defeat to Liverpool," said Ferguson. "It was conceding the goals in the short period of time. When you are in a game and when you are in the moment you have got to realise that. You have got to take responsibility on the pitch and think to yourself 'we are too wide open here. They are cutting through us too easy'.

"So that's where you go and you maybe sit ten men behind the ball and make it difficult for them to do that. But in terms of the quality and the level of player they are up against is top level."

Falkirk captain Stephen McGinn was quick to jump in on the criticism as he used the PSV Eindhoven playoff result in August where Rangers went over to the Netherlands and beat the Eredivisie outfit as an example of what the Glasgow side can do.

And he believes the negativity around van Bronckhorst's position in the Ibrox hot seat began after the 4-0 away defeat to Ajax a month later. He said: "Napoli and Liverpool can do this but having gone to Eindhoven and play as well as they did, get a result, clean sheet and then go to Amsterdam a month later and lose the way that they did, it's really set it off.

"The other two; they are the best teams. They are going to qualify comfortably but the Ajax night was the one that set it all off with the negativity."
